Claudia Downey

Claudia Downey is relatively new to the art scene.

After having three professions – intensive care nurse, mother, and middle school Health and CPR teacher – I am retired as of June 2016, and I am now pursuing my long-standing passion which is art.

I have always had an interest in art and took lessons during my teen years. When my children were young, I took watercolor classes at Silvermine but found that I did not have adequate time to devote to painting, and therefore abrogated my direct involvement in art for over 20 years. However, I still looked at the world from the viewpoint of an artist. I would analyze the lighting, the colors, the composition of the various environments that I would find myself in. I loved taking photographs of places to which I had travelled and the people that I had met with the intention of someday using them in my artwork.

Finally, in August 2015, I made a commitment restarting my art. I started painting every Monday night; I signed up for the art class at the Redding Senior Center with Adele Moros (who is now my mentor), and I took a still-life class with Rick Daskam at SCAN which I continue to attend.

Painting has become the focal point of my life and I am now fully immersed in it. I am a member of SCAN through which I have met other local artists; I attend their demonstrations and programs on a regular basis, I co-chaired the Juried Show in July 2018, and I am currently their membership chair. In July 2017, I became a member of Gallery 25 in New Milford and chaired their Open Juried Show in October of 2018. Additionally, I have been exhibiting my art work in local shows such as: Mark Twain Library Juried Show in Redding, the New Pond Farm Invitational Art Show, Richter Art Show, Roxbury Juried Show, Wilton Library SCAN Show, Southbury Library, New Milford Historical Society Show, Merwinsville Show, and the many SCAN shows throughout the year.

The Connecticut countryside as well as my travels across the country and abroad are my inspirations for painting. Painting is my motivation for getting up early in the morning so as not to waste a minute of the day!
